If you have ever had the opportunity to drive up and down US-19 in West Pasco County, you’ll probably notice how ugly it is. US Highway 19 in Pasco County, Florida is full of poor landscaping, ugly busIness street signs and a tremendous amount of power lines.
It is no wonder why the area is so depressed. If I was a business owner that was thinking about opening up shop in this area, how could I stand out in a crowd with all of this clutter. This area has so much automobile traffic too! There is no reason why West Pasco County businesses shouldn’t be booming! OH Yeah…that’s right…it’s because these businesses are never noticed because they are buried behind a bunch of distracting business signs, poor landscaping and lack of building code enforcement.
Just think about for a sec…With ALL of these distractions, you’ll probably notice yourself disregarding the noise and placing most of these businesses in your peripheral. Watch this video below and you’ll get where I’m going with this.
The Famous Awareness Test Video
I’m convinced that the local trashy sign clutter and overgrown landscaping are like the basketball players that are passing the ball around in the video above. The moonwalking bear is the business that you just drove by or possibly the pedestrian that you just hit because you were too busy trying to find a building number that was camouflaged by bunch of tacky “We Buy Gold” signs. In other words…you were trying to count how many times the ball was passed around (sign clutter) and you missed the moonwalking bear (building number).
The old saying is…location, location, location
West Pasco County no doubt has a tremendous amount of commuters that come and go through this area, but yet local business owners are choosing other nearby places to set up shop such as Spring Hill and Trinity among others. A great business with a great product and a solid advertising/marketing plan may be an exception when it comes to surviving a bad economy these days, however, the icing on the cake when it comes to opening a successful business is the prime location. Business owners know that a prime location will attract many drive by customers and window shoppers. This is why businesses are choosing the surrounding cities for the future homes of their restaurants and shops. If West Pasco County officials want to see more businesses move here, then there needs to be a commercial neighborhood makeover or some kind of beautification act.
Here’s a West Pasco County Economic Development Solution!
West Pasco County should start with a makeover. I don’t have ALL of the answers and I am not a city planner nor a politician, however, cleaning up this part of the county is where I would start if I were running things.
Yes, tax incentives may be desirable and can attract businesses as well, but when it boils down to it, the county needs to LOOK desirable too.
Defining and enforcing street sign codes, burying the power lines, and cleaning up the landscaping should be a good start. The local government needs to step up to the plate and start holding the local businesses accountable for the sign trash that exist throughout U.S. Route 19, SR52 and other nearby areas. Burying the power lines may be an expensive project, but I consider it an investment for West Pasco. Burying the power lines as well as citing businesses for their ugly street sign habits will surly make this town beautiful and more desirable. A cleaner and more desirable looking Pasco County will surely attract more businesses. When this county starts looking more attractive, businesses will move here, more jobs will be created and then comes the tax revenue for the local government to continue to fund special projects such as this.
Additional benefits that could spin off a beautification project.
- Pasco County Business Growth
- Pasco County Job Creation
- More desirable shopping experiences for local residents & neighboring cities/counties
- Pasco County Unemployment Decline
- Decline in deadly car accidents
- Pasco County commercial & residential real estate explosion (increase in home sales and home values)
- More development and construction projects
- Job, Job, Jobs
A basic beautification project will definitely help a depressed West Pasco County and would definitely compliment a project such as the Sunwest Harbourtowne.
